Leash training for a reactive dog✅

On leash is an obedience exercise.

🦮 If you have a powerful dog and are struggling to direct them whilst getting them used to the slip leash, adding a clip leash or harness could help you. This is a trick we use for reactive and powerful dogs that require direction as well as learning clip leash pressure.

As a good pack leader, you dictate the pace and direction.

🦮 Your leash is a direct communication line from you to your dog, the energy you project will correlate to how your dog preforms on leash.

Slip leashes are the best way to train a pully dog - you position the lead on the head muscles therefore you have control over the dog as a whole. If you control the head, you control the body.

Being positioned on the head muscle, you control the head vs the neck. Where the head goes the body follows.

When the slip leash is on correctly the control is taken from the dog onto you, the handler. They are unable to take you on a walk. It puts them in a surrendered state with manifests a calm dog.

The slip leashes pressure train your dog.

You dog will begin to associate the feeling of pressure to halting and not continue to pull you.

If you’re new to this and not quite there yet, don’t worry!

You can learn the skills necessary to establish yourself as the Pack Leader easily with just some simple routine changes. You just need to first identify the areas you need to work on.

🚪 Pushing through doorways:
Just like with food, dogs instinctually know that the Pack Leader is in control and should be the one to lead. Dogs don’t walk ahead of their Pack Leader, so you will need to change your role if you’re the one following your dog around the house.

🦘Uncontrollable jumping:
Jumping is a dominance behavior. Enough said!
- We’re not taking about when you ask for a hug

🦮💨Leash pulling:
What we say is the ultimate sign you need to work on pack leadership. If your dog doesn’t respect you on a leash then it’s a sure sign you need work on a lot in your home life, it’s always a direct correlation. Plus, if you don’t walk your dog daily then it’s really hard and tbh maybe a dog wasn’t for you.

🥱 Waking you up:
We’re not taking about those random nights where your dog has the 💩’s. We’re taking about your dog consistently waking you up whining, being destructive or barking. Weather it’s for your attention or to check on “what’s outside”

What different behaviors can you see here?👀

📝 Some dogs simply didn’t learn appropriate social skills as a puppy, while others are hard-wired to be pushy. At other times, a fun play session can suddenly escalate into something inappropriate.

📝 It is important to learn how to recognize the early warning signs of aggression, so you can take whatever steps are necessary to keep everyone safe.

📝 It’s impossible there’s absolutely O warning signs so taking the time to learn dog body language is important when being a responsible dog owner especially if you take your dog to public areas with other dogs!

📝 If your dog isn’t good at play and is a little bit of a bully never think I’ll just stop socializing. This will only make socializing become over stimulating.

Use appropriate training to help your dog become better at playing!

Understanding your dog will help. So, the more quality time you spend with them exploring whether that be socializing, walking or playing the better understanding you’ll have!

Never use treats to modify bad behaviors!

🍭 Treats should only be used to enhance an activity such as command training, they should not be used for expected behaviors. If the only way your dog listens to you is by dangling a high reward in the face, you have a much bigger problem than your dog not listening to you.

🍭 To put it bluntly your dog rules you and thinks their in control.

🍭 If your dog continuously barks at the door, you give it a treat to stop the barking, but then they run back to the door and back again what is that communicating to them?

There is one issue we see with aggressive/reactive dogs. CONFIDENCE!

🐷 Treats should be complimentary to your dogs diet! This shouldn’t be garbage for their stomach.

🐷 We would recommend feeding liver, heart or freeze dried beef as a treat as this is full of goodness for your dog.

👧🏼 We have conversations with them, seek them out for comfort, buy them toys and dress them up in clothes.

😒 Owners inflict their emotions onto their dog. They make up stories of how they’re feeling, what they’re thinking or if they’re hungry. Some psychologist argue it’s a form of deflecting how the human is really feeling.

👶🏻 Over baby’d dogs is something we deal with a lot - commonly associated with “my dog has anxiety or reactivity”. When really, they have the equivalent to possessive partner who won’t let them be social, meet other people/ dogs or trust them home alone

🐶 Understanding how we humanize our dogs can help us identify what boundaries we need to put in place to avoid the situation worsening and to be frank give your dog a better quality life.

Remember, Dogs are animals, they are not humans. They’re malleable to be whatever you want them to be!cogs are suppose to be the ultimate companion not a bane on your social activities
